In the Davis Cup Group Stage competition played September 10-15 in Zhuhai, China, the United States Davis Cup team dominated Group C, winning every team match and posting an impressive 8-1 record in individual matches to move to the Davis Cup Finals.
Under the leadership of captain Bob Bryan and coach Mike Bryan, the U.S. began their campaign with a 3-0 sweep over Chile. Reilly Opelka and Brandon Nakashima secured thrilling singles victories, while Austin Krajicek and Rajeev Ram sealed the doubles win.
The U.S. followed with another 3-0 shutout of Slovakia, ending with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Germany, securing their spot in the knockout stage.
Reilly Opelka opened the tournament against Chile's Cristian Garin, securing a 6-3, 4-6, 7-6(3) victory in a tightly contested match. Nakashima delivered a 7-6(5), 2-6, 7-6(3) win over Alejandro Tabilo, and Krajicek and Ram finished off the sweep with a 4-6, 6-4, 7-6(3) victory in the doubles match.
Team USA's second match against Slovakia resulted in another compelling performance with Opelka and Nakashima winning their singles matches with relative ease, while Krajicek and Ram continued their doubles mastery.
In the crucial final group match against Germany, the U.S. faced tougher competition, but emerged with a 2-1 win, finishing the group stage undefeated in team matches.
The U.S. squad's combination of leadership and grit, driven by the Bryan Bros. experience, now positions them as a serious contender heading into the knockout stage later this year.
With the group stage completed, the United States will play either Argentina or Australia in the first round of the eight-team Davis Cup Finals in Malaga, Spain. The lineup consists of Italy, Argentina, Australia, the United States, Germany, Netherlands, Canada, and Spain. The Finals will be played from November 19-24, 2024.
The last time that the United States won the Davis Cup was when Bob and Mike Bryan helped secure the victory in 2007 in Portland, Oregon.
