World No. 1 pairing Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan won the MadridDoubles Championshipsfor the fourth time on Sunday as they defeated6th seeds Michael Llodra of Franceand Serbian Nenad Zimonjic in the final of the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 clay-court tennis tournament.
The Bryan twins were also victorious in the Spanish capital in 2006 and 2007 and reclaimed the title last year with victory over Daniel Nestor and Zimonjic. Victory marked their 71st tour-level team title, and their 19th at ATP World Tour Masters 1000 level - - - the second highest all time.
The top seeds were rarely troubled throughout the match, saving the one break point they faced and capitalizing on all three of their break point opportunities to claim victory in just 56 minutes. The 33 year olds had saved match point in a gripping semi-final win over their fellow Americans John Isner and Sam Querrey a day earlier. It was the 10th straight time they had beaten Isner and the 6th time they had beaten the "Quizner" tandem.
"We’re really happy," said Mike Bryan. "We were fortunate to squeak through yesterday’s match against Querrey and Isner, when we had a crazy match point. We felt like we had no pressure today and I thought we played one of our best matches of the tournament."
Bob Bryan added, "We got through a tight one yesterday and today we felt like we were playing with the house chips. We played very aggressive today. We love Madrid; the conditions are very fast andit suits our game well."
The Bryans claimed their fourth tour-level title of the season and their third on clay. They clinched their third successive Australian Open crown in January, before winning back-to-back clay-court titles at Houston and Monte-Carlo in April. They also finished runners-up last week in Barcelona and in the first week of the season in Sydney.Excerpted fromATP WEB Site, May 8, 2011.

*** Speaking of Hall of Fame Stanford Coach, Dick Gould - - - who Wayne always calls Coachese for his wisdom and insights and astounding coaching records - - - he's hosting the combined Men's and Women's NCAA Team and Individual Championships on the Farm in Palo Alto, May 19-30. We urge all club pros, high school coaches, and parents to load up their players and attend this event for as many days as possible. As we always say in our talks and articles: Champions take it in through their eyes and not their ears. You have to see it before you can dream it and you must be passionate about it before you can achieve it. Attending one motivational tennis event - - - like an exciting and raucous and well played college match or pro tournament - - - is better than 30 days of practice. Juniors return to their club or park or school more fired up for tennis than ever - - - and somehow magically improved. *** Seeing the huge crowd for the USC @ UCLA Men's Tennis Match a couple of Fridays ago sure touched our tennis soul. Fabulously exciting and well played tennis! Class coaches in Billy Martin and Peter Smith and the fans rooted so hard, but in such a positive way. So many juniors there and it gave me a great feeling about the future of our sport and special thanks for all the help and support of the event to: Bob Kramer, Steve Bellamy, Justin Gimelstob, Bob Bryan, Grant Chen, Ryan Macaulay, Josh Osswald, Chris Ojakian, Tony Graham, Aaron Fox, Steve Worthington, Mark Spearman, and Mark Basham. And let me add one more thing that warmed my heart - - - we saw lotsa SoCal players on both the Trojan and Bruin squads. I've been a very vocal critic of too many foreign players in American college tennis and along with better crowds for college matches I'm seeing some traction for more of our US kids playing on college teams now - - - and that's how it should be.
*** Congrats to the USC Men's Team for winning the Ojai Team Championship and the Pac 10 Conference Championship, and how 'bout that Stevie Johnson, from Orange County, being the #1 player in college tennis and winning both the singles and doubles at Ojai. We say well done to him and to his Trojan Coach Peter Smith and to his Dad 'n Coach, Big Steve.
*** Coach Bryan is looking forward to once again emceeing the gala Beverly Hills Invitational on Sunday, May 22. This fabulous event isheaded up by all time niceguy Geoff Palmer and dynamic Tony Graham.
*** The Bros. are sick about the Lakers being down zip-3 to the Dallas Mavs in the NBA Playoffs second round. They still have hope and they do wish everyone would get off Pau Gasol's back. They enjoyed meeting him and chatting with him at the Indian Wells Tournament this year. Very nice guy and fabulous basketball player who gives it his best every night. And what a class act.

*** Coach Bryan went up to watch UCSB play Loyola Marymount a few Saturdays ago and he enjoyed seeing lots of Santa Barbara folks and even his ol' Gaucho Doubles Partner, Dave Grokenberger, a top REattorney in the area. He was happy to see him and alsowatch thesquad win under great Coach Marty Davis, but as he was leaving,Dave said, "Hey Wayne. We need to raise more money for the teams. And we need you to do us a favor." "You got it, Groke," he replied. But he shouldn't have - - - Why? Yeah, you guessed it, Dave and the coaches and teams and athletic department and SB VIPS and alumni are hosting a gala banquet to "Roast Wayne Bryan." It will be held in February of 2012 and more details will follow as the event draws near. Bryan was unmercifully roasted at an event like this several years ago and he got crushed and has been in psychological counseling ever since . . .
*** Happy to report that Kathy's wrist is now healed, although a little stiff and sore yet, but she is back riding in the Malibu Mountains on her wonder horse, Elan. She says thanks to everyone for their wonderful support and concern.
